Are you committed to personal and professional growth? Do you enjoy making others stronger? Are you honest and reliable? If you have the character qualities of growth orientation, desire to serve and honesty, and if you also love to teach and play guitar and are good at it, then you may have what it takes to be one of our teachers. And if you have the character qualities the character qualities of growth orientation, desire to serve and honesty, and if you can write, think and learn, you may have what it takes to be one of our amazing staffers.
If so, please send your resume to us with a handwritten cover letter. Here’s how it works:
Each year, NYC Guitar School/Brooklyn Guitar Schools receives over a hundred resumes of potential teachers and several hundred for desk staff. From this pool of applicants we typically review resumes and do phone screening to choose eight to twelve candidates to interview for a given position. Candidates interview with three or four school representatives for a comprehensive look into the personality and ability of a potential teacher or staffer. After that, two or three candidates are asked to come to teach a sample lesson (teachers) or for a day or two of training (staff side). The sample lessons are FUN! Since all of us in the school already know how to play guitar, potential teachers are asked to teach a beginners lesson on anything BUT guitar. Past lessons have been beginners lessons on origami, how to change a bike tire, magic, you name it! Finally, after much deliberation we hire a teacher or staffer on a trial basis or (as can be the case) we start all over again!
But we’re not done yet! New teachers undergo a three month trial period which includes learning the NYC Guitar School beginners curriculum and approach, and small-group teacher training with NYC Guitar School founder Dan Emery. New desk staffers undergo a tried and tested three month training program, including our famous desk superstar lessons, surrounded by supportive, positive and service oriented staff. Our goal for every new office side staffer is to help them grow in personal and professional skills so that they can eventually run one of our programs, or pick up the skills to succeed in their career beyond NYC Guitar School.
To be considered please send a handwritten cover letter and a resume to our main school (NYC Guitar School) in Manhattan. Virtually all of our teachers have a music degree and formal teaching experience, but we will meet with potential teachers who have demonstrated mastery of playing and teaching in other ways and who absolutely love guiding and empowering guitar students to be their best. For desk side staffers, we prefer a college degree, but will consider anybody who is absolutely on fire with passion to grow and serve, and who knows how to write, think and learn.
