Lessons for Young People
Q: How old should my son or daughter be to start lessons or classes?
A: At New York City Guitar School, we accept young people for private guitar lessons beginning at age three for Suzuki guitar lessons, six years old for private lessons and eight years old for our Rock Guitar program.
Q:What are your lessons for young people like?
A: That depends on the kid! We will carefully select a teacher who matches up with your child's age and interests, and your priorities. All of our instructors will help their students develop musically in a fun and motivating context.
Q: Where will my child's lessons be located?
A: Private lessons are available in your
Manhattan home or at our studio in the Recording and Rehearsal Arts Building at 251 West 30th Street.
Lessons are 45 minutes long, once per week. For children under 12 lessons are 30 minutes long, once per week.
Q:What times are available?
A:Home visit lessons are available seven days a week. Studio lessons are available Mon-Thu 10am-9:30pm, Friday 10am-5pm and weekends 10am-6pm.
Q: How do private lessons work?
A: The first step is to set up a trial lesson. Call or e-mail our friendly staff (at 646-485-7244 or info@nycguitarschool.com). We'll ask you about your child's age, experience and interests and suggest one of our expert teachers for a single, no-obligation trial lesson.
Q: How much is tuition?
A:The trial lesson is available in your home for $60 ($50 for children age 5-11) or in our studio After the trial you can continue with individual lessons, however most of our students take advantage of our discounted pre-paid blocks of five or ten lessons:
FORTY-FIVE MINUTE LESSONS
Studio WEEKNIGHTS after 4pm=$80 individual/$63.50 block rate
Your home or office=$70 each/$58.50 block rate
Studio WEEKEND=$60 each/$53.50 block rate
Studio WEEKDAY (10am-3:45pm)=$50 each/$43.50 block rate
THIRTY MINUTE CHILD LESSONS (available through age 11)
Your home or office=$60 each/$48.50 block rate
Studio WEEKNIGHTS after 4pm=$60 each/$43.50 block rate
Studio WEEKEND=$50 each/$36.50 block rate
Studio WEEKDAY 10am-3:45pm=$50 each/$33.50 block rate
Suzuki lessons=$85 per home lesson/$65 per studio lesson (Note: For SUZUKI tuition and information go here.)
You can withdraw at anytime from a set of lessons for a one hundred percent refund or credit for remaining lessons.
Q: How much will my daughter or son need to practice?
A: For young children, we encourage 15 minutes of practice, three or four times per week.
For teenagers, we encourage 30 minutes of practice, four or five times per week.
Of course, if a student wants to practice more, our teachers will be encouraging.
Q: Does my son or daughter need to bring her or his guitar to the school?
A: No. Guitars are available for the use of students during lessons in the studio.
Teens are welcome to bring their own guitars, but most prefer to use one of the guitars
available for their use. This way, they don't need to bring their guitar to school or around the city.
Q: Are there any discounts available?
A: We encourage those with flexible schedules to take advantage of the NYC Guitar School STUDIO WEEKEND 15% DISCOUNT tuition of $535 for weekend lessons or the NYC Guitar School STUDIO DAYTIME 30% DISCOUNT tution of $435 for lessons Mon-Thur before 4pm. Children under age 12 can also take 1/2 hour studio lessons in our school Monday-Friday before 5pm for $315 or on the weekend for $365.
Your child can also learn with a friend! They will experience extra motivation and fun by learning for only an extra $90 per set of 10 lessons.
Q: What kind of guitar should I get for my daughter or son?
A: For young children, we recommend a three-quarter size nylon string guitar. For teenagers we recommend either
a steel string acoustic guitar or an electric guitar. We also provide economical guitar rentals.
Q: Do you have gift certificates?
A: Yes! Attractive gift certificates are available for any number of lessons.
