Date:August 30, 2016

James Wengrow

James Wengrow began performing at the age of 14 in his hometown (Gold Coast, Australia) with the city's established jazz musicians before relocating to the neighboring city of Brisbane in 2008, and then to Melbourne in late 2011. During this time, James played with some of the country’s leading jazz and improvised music practitioners. Since June 2013, James has been performing, teaching and studying in New York City, where he most frequently performs in various clubs with the improvised music trio Proxy, electric rock/jazz outfit Alpha Band, indie/jazz crossover The Sleeved Hearts, and his own 'Meshuggah-Jazz' quartet featuring some of Avant-jazz's rising stars.

James started his teaching career giving lessons to his fellow classmates while still in high school. Since then, he has taught at various Australian music studios and schools such as Soundworx Music Studio, Beaumaris North Primary School, and St. Laurence’s College. Since coming to America, James has extended his teaching portfolio at Gymboree Play and Learn, Harrison School of Music and the Music, Dance and Art School of Douglaston. He is very excited to join the team at the New York City Guitar School!

During course of his studies at the Purchase College State University of New York (Masters in Jazz Studies), the Victorian College of Arts (Honors year entailing his thesis ‘Toward a Technique for the Performance of Two-Part Polyrhythms on Electric Guitar’) and at the Queensland Conservatorium (Bachelor of Advanced Music Performance), James’ teachers have included acclaimed musicians and composers Vic Juris, John Abercrombie, Timothy Albright, Jon Faddis, James Sherlock and Marc Hannaford. James’ playing and compositional style draw upon an eclectic array of influences ranging from classic and contemporary jazz, rock, non-idiomatic improvised music, contemporary classical and electronic music. We're excited that James is bringing his experience and love for music to NYC Guitar School!
