Q: What is the Suzuki Method? A: The Suzuki Method is a developmentally appropriate way to teach music to children ages three and up. Teacher and parents work together to create an environment in which children can learn music as easily and naturally as they learn to speak their native language.
Q: How old should my son or daughter be to start lessons or classes? A: The Suzuki Method was developed for children as young as 3.
Q: How does it work? A: Parents begin by reading Nurtured by Love by Shinichi Suzuki. Next, parents attend three lessons without the child. In these lessons, parents learn the fundamentals of playing guitar as well as games and activities they can use to teach their children at home (parent lessons reduce the time it takes children to learn the Twinkle Variations by 4-6 weeks). Parents will also learn what size guitar, stool and music to buy.
Students begin by listening to the Book 1 CD daily and by watching parents practice at home. After the three parent lessons, students will attend weekly half-hour lessons in which teacher and parent are both present. During weekly lessons, students learn the fundamentals of rhythm and playing technique in small, easy-to-manage steps. Games and activities make practice and repetition fun.
In addition to weekly lessons, parents and students also attend monthly group lessons. Students enjoy the social aspects of group lessons and learn such skills as cooperation, sharing, self-confidence, and following directions. Parents exchange ideas, support one another, and take pride in their children’s accomplishments.
Q: What are the benefits? A: The Suzuki Method requires a substantial commitment of time, energy and money, but the benefits for children are numerous and well-documented.
The Suzuki Method develops the whole child. Its goal is to nurture fine human beings who can confidently overcome challenges, understand responsibility and cooperate with others. Fostering these qualities in children helps to make the world a better place. Suzuki is Education through Music.
