James Wengrow began performing at the age of 14 in his hometown (Gold Coast, Australia) with the city’s established jazz musicians before relocating to the neighboring city of Brisbane in 2008, and then to Melbourne in late 2011. During this time, James played with some of the country’s leading jazz and improvised music practitioners. Since June 2013, James has been performing, teaching and studying in New York City. His main projects include the improvised music trio Kinsmen & Strangers, indie/jazz crossover The Sleeved Hearts, and his own avant-jazz compositional outlet, the James Wengrow Lidless quartet.
During course of his studies at the Purchase College State University of New York (Masters in Jazz Studies), the Victorian College of Arts and at the Queensland Conservatorium, James’ teachers have included Vic Juris, John Abercrombie, Timothy Albright and Jon Faddis.
James started his teaching career giving lessons to his fellow classmates while still in high school. Since then, he has taught at various Australian music studios and schools. Since coming to America, James has extended his teaching portfolio at Gymboree Play and Learn, Harrison School of Music and the Music, Dance and Art School of Douglaston before joining the NYC Guitar School team mid-2016.
