Joel started playing guitar at age 7 when he could be found rocking a red plastic Burt and Ernie guitar on the roof of his Mom’s car. Since then, his instrument may have changed, but his enthusiasm has not! Joel plays flamenco, jazz, smart kids’ songs, acoustic pop, and loves to arrange the latest hits for for his students to play.
Unique among NYCGS teachers, Joel’s degree is not in music–but after graduating from law school, Joel decided to follow his passion for the arts. His first stop was developing interactive K-6 curriculum for Moondrop Entertainment, NextLesson, and Launchpad Toys that focused on music, storytelling, and educational gaming. He also transferred his passion for songwriting into the classroom as a guest teacher, helping students write both music and lyrics in acoustic and musical theatre styles. He played in multiple church bands–and even recorded and released an EP of kids’ songs entitled Where Are My Pants? and wrote two original musicals which were featured in the Musical Cafe festival of new works in Oakland, California.
Joel is a skilled vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. His teaching style is distinguished by patience, adaptability, and fun, and children and adults both thrive and progress with his coaching. We’re thrilled to have him on the NYCGS team!
